Subluxation is the term used by chiropractors and other medical practitioners to describe a condition in which one or more vertebrae within the spine has moved out of the proper position. The word originates from the Latin words sub, meaning “slightly,” and luxate, which means “dislocate.” Subluxation is a serious condition that places abnormal pressure on the nerves of the spine as well as nearby blood vessels and muscles. That pressure can create an imbalance in normal bodily function, and the results can be observed throughout the body. If subluxation goes uncorrected for a significant period of time, nerve damage can worsen.
Subluxation can have a number of different causal factors, some of which are avoidable and some of which are not. For example, many types of subluxation occur as a result of a traumatic injury, such as a car accident, sporting accident or a simple fall. In other cases, subluxation is the result of ongoing physical stress brought about by improper sleep positioning, repetitive stress in the workplace, or poor posture. Many people will experience subluxation at one point or another during the course of their lives, and back pain is among the primary symptoms of the condition.
Chiropractors are trained in various techniques of addressing subluxation and other spinal misalignments. One of the most common treatment options is a spinal adjustment, during which the practitioner uses his or her hands to apply precisely directed force to the affected area of the spine. This movement can help restore alignment of spinal vertebrae, which can reduce pain and increase the range of motion. An important component of treating back pain includes educating patients on steps they can take within their own lives to improve the health of their spine. This includes optimal sleep positioning, targeted stretching and exercise, and improvements in posture.
