Many people are unaware that there are more than 150 different types of headaches. Among the most common are tension headaches, which virtually everyone will experience at one point or another. A tension headache will bring mild to moderate pain, and it’s often felt at the temples or the back of the head and neck. Cluster headaches are more intense and are characterized by piercing or burning pain behind the eyes. Some people who experience cluster headaches are so distracted by the pain that they are unable to sit still during an attack. Sinus headaches are felt in the sinus cavities in the front of the head and are usually caused by some form of sinus infection. Migraine headaches are among the most severe, and they bring about a throbbing and unrelenting pain that is sometimes accompanied by a sensitivity to sound and light, as well as nausea and vomiting.
Researchers have determined that there are a number of different causes for headache pain. In some cases, patients experience a headache due to illness, such as a cold, infection or fever. For others, stress can bring on headaches. Poor posture and strain to the eyes, neck and back are also headache triggers. Environmental factors also play a causal role, and people can have a reaction to secondhand smoke, household chemicals, high pollution levels, perfumes or air fresheners, and even certain types of food. Many people become aware of the things that trigger their headaches and seek to avoid exposure to those irritants.
In a chiropractic setting, the focus is placed on finding the source of a patient’s headache. In many cases, a misalignment of the cervical vertebrae is to blame, which is a condition that can be addressed through manual manipulation techniques. For others, chronic poor posture or work-related physical challenges are behind ongoing headaches. Treatment techniques vary from one patient to the next, depending on their specific set of needs and goals.
