Knee joints play a central role in daily activities, including walking, running and climbing stairs. Knee pain is an incredibly common condition, and in many cases, it’s the result of minor strain that will heal on its own within a short period of time. However, there are certain conditions that should prompt an immediate call to a chiropractor. Examples include knee pain that is pronounced enough to limit daily activities, the inability of over-the-counter painkillers and rest to address the condition and knee pain that has not responded well to other treatment approaches. When a knee injury is sustained as a result of sudden trauma, it is important to seek immediate treatment in order to avoid complications and severe pain.
While injuries do lead to many types of knee pain, they are not the only causal factors. In some cases, the aging process can lead to a degeneration of the soft tissues that support and cushion the knee joint. For other people, knee pain does not originate in the knee itself but is referred pain that is the result of issues in the back, hip, ankle or pelvis. These types of nearby issues can place undue stress on the knee joint, leading to discomfort, pain or restricted mobility.
As with all other chiropractic matters, treatment depends on the individual set of needs and goals presented by each patient. In some cases, chiropractic manual manipulation can be effective in reducing knee pain. For other patients, use of tools and techniques including ultrasound and inferential therapy can provide lasting results. Another common approach is an individualized plan of physical therapy exercises and stretches meant to strengthen the supportive tissues of the knee and improve overall joint health. Focus is always placed on educating patients on techniques and modifications that they can use to improve their overall health and wellness.
