Did you know that the amount of emotional stress we experience greatly affects our health? Higher amounts of stress signals the release of cortisol which will cause body-wide inflammation. Inflammation in turn opens the door for a decrease in the function of the immune system and also causes overall body aches and pains.

Through chiropractic, we work with our patients to eliminate the effects that chemical, physical, and emotional stressors have on the body, but often times we find that individuals neglect their mental health to make way for more pressing needs. It is important to remember that steps for reducing mental stress need to be done on a daily basis for a minimum of 20 minutes a day. These steps may include prayer, meditation, reading, or practicing gratitude.

Gratitude can be incorporated into prayer and meditation, but this is not always for everyone. One can show gratitude and be more at peace instantly by doing things such as volunteering, giving out compliments, being an active listener, sending handwritten notes showing appreciation, and being patient with others. To serve oneself privately, begin a daily journal of 3 things you are grateful for or chose a gratitude accountability partner. Have your last message each night be your thoughts of gratitude. Some days being grateful is harder than others, but spending that time to reflect on your day will remind you of just how beautiful life really is.
